MONSTER X - 1993-1998 aren'tuniversally recognized as crucial years in hardcore, in terms of invention and innovation, though there certainly were a handful of brilliant bands that peaked during that era. Also worth noting for these purposes is that there existed no small number of bands that rose to prominence through the dissemination of conservative ideas disguised as rebellious outcries and through militant posturing that appealed to jock-like herds of straight edge kids the world over. Monster X were important for their unbelievably devastating sound, but as noteworthy for their intelligence and for the well-deserved punch in the throat they gave to the [arguably] stagnant straight edge scene of the time. Highly regarded, appreciated and, in some circles, beloved by youth crew, metal, grind, and crust kids alike, they drew some of the most diverse crowds in hardcore history. A pro-choice, dependence/religion-free grind band with hardcore song structures, who put out a covers 7" with brutal versions of Bold, Uniform Choice, No For An Answer, Chain of Strength, etc... classics, splits with the now legendary west coast thrashers Spazz and Capitalist Casualties and w/French Canadian grinders Human Greed, and two of their own overwhelmingly heavy/relentlessly fast and lyrically progressive 7"s, as well as comp tracks... Monster X never promoted straight edge as anything but positive and liberating.
